The care of ventilator-dependent patients has been a primary focus of RML Specialty Hospital since our founding in 1987. RML continues to make advancements in ventilator weaning and today treats more ventilator dependent patients than any other long term acute care hospital in the nation. Our dedicated team of board-certified pulmonologists work with our registered nurses, respiratory, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, and clinical dietitians to rebuild a patient’s strength and stamina. To help manage the fears and anxieties sometimes associated with weaning, our clinical psychologists work with patients to build their confidence and courage. These specialists come together to bring a holistic course of treatment to our ventilator dependent patients one that prepares them to breathe independently when they are ready, both physically and mentally, to do so.

The future holds much promise for even greater accomplishments. RML is the largest contributor to a number of clinical research studies that are paving the way for considerable improvements in ventilator weaning. The studies, some of which have already indicated significant preliminary results explore quality of life issues, long-term outcomes, and patient anxiety levels as factors in successful weaning.
