Caring for the critically ill

RML patients suffer from a wide variety of critical illness and conditions, including:

  • The inability to breathe independently due to catastrophic injury or illness
  • Severe, debilitating heart disease
  • Diseases (such as diabetes) that impede recovery
  • Lung injury due to infection or surgery complications
  • Wounds that will not heal normally, usually resulting from limited mobility or existing chronic conditions such as diabetes or vascular disease
  • Slow-healing wounds from burns or surgery complications
  • Degenerating physical ability, severe speech, nutrition or cognitive impairment caused by an existing or prior medical condition
  • A combination of medical conditions that impede recovery

One of the most challenging aspects of your work is selecting the right long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) for a seriously ill patient. It can be a difficult and confusing decision for a patient's family and they look to you for advice. Clearly, the best recommendation is a facility that delivers state-of-the-art medical treatment from the expert hands of compassionate care givers. RML Specialty Hospital is dedicated to delivering specialized extended care to the critically ill and has been the provider of choice in Chicago and across the country for the past 20 years.

Delivering specialized programs with teamwork

The center of excellence for long-term acute care, RML Specialty Hospital offers a concentration of talent and level of skill that few facilities can match. Our highly-credentialed, multidisciplinary team consists of 80 physician specialists and a staff of 400 that includes nurses, respiratory and rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, and nutritionists. Many have devoted much of their careers to RML and have worked together as a cohesive, mutually supportive team for years.

To help patients grow stronger and healthier, RML professionals deliver focused care through our specialized medical programs:

Ventilator Weaning - the largest program of its kind in the nation, designed to wean or reduce an individual's dependence on the ventilator and restore maximum respiratory function
Wound Care - nationally recognized for contributions to Best Practices in the treatment of slow-to-heal and non-healing wounds
Medically Complex - focused on the functional aspects of rehabilitation commensurate with a patient's strength and abilities. (Co-managed by Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, which provides medical direction for patient care)

You can be assured that your patient's needs will be met at all times with 24-hour physician coverage and a nurse-to-patient ratio that is adjusted to match the demands of your patient's condition. In addition, RML maintains ICU capabilities including cardiac monitoring, as well as radiology and pharmacy services.

Referring and transferring patients

Our referral process is flexible, you can choose the method that's most convenient for you. Once we receive your referral, an RML Specialty Hospital Clinical Liaison Nurse will conduct an on-site evaluation within 24 hours to determine a patient's clinical acceptance for admission. These experienced nurses will work closely with you and the family to ensure that the transfer runs smoothly and that the medically appropriate personnel and equipment are waiting for the patient upon arrival. Our aim is to make the entire process as seamless as possible.

Supporting families

At RML, we work hard to heal our patients. And, we know that family members need care too. Families are welcome to take advantage of our many support services to help them during this difficult time. Because we respect the role that family members and other loved ones can play in a patient's recovery, we welcome their questions and keep them informed of progress, of course, with respect to patient privacy.
