Our Vision

  • Clinical outcomes;
  • Patient satisfaction;
  • Efficiency;
  • Research; and
  • Teaching and education.

Our history

Established in 1987, RML Specialty Hospital primarily focused on treating and weaning patients dependent on mechanical ventilators, and today is the largest single ventilator weaning hospital in the nation. Our scope expanded several years ago with the addition of our Wound Management and Medically Complex programs. In 2003 and again in 2005, the National Association of Long-term Care Hospitals recognized RML's innovative methodologies in wound management with prestigious best practice awards.

Our Medically Complex program brings the expertise of RML and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) together to provide the very best in medical treatment and rehabilitation therapies for those suffering from multiple conditions.

Accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO), RML is the result of a partnership between Rush University Medical Center and Loyola University Health System.

Dedicated to individualized patient care

The center of excellence for long-term acute care, RML meets each patient's individualized needs through a compassionate approach delivered by a caring staff. In every area, RML team members take time to listen, lend a helping hand, and address the medical and personal needs of each patient. Physicians and staff are on-site, around the clock, so patients are constantly monitored to immediately respond to patient needs. Our team is made up of 80 physicians and more than 400 nurses, respiratory and rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, and nutritionists who are dedicated to providing care and comfort to RML patients. Many of our team members have made their careers at RML and have worked together closely for years. We believe our cohesive, mutually supportive team and our commitment to healing promote a culture of care that is unlike any other long-term acute care hospital.

Committed to advanced research

Improving the quality of life for our patients doesn't end with hands on treatment. It extends to clinical research. RML is currently involved in several studies that may change the way individuals are weaned from mechanical ventilators and enable them to lead more independent lives.

Long-term Acute Care Hospitals

Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACH) are designed for patients who need intense, extended care following treatment at a traditional acute care facility. These patients usually have medically complex or multiple medical conditions and generally require hospitalization for more than 25 days. Meeting all the same conditions of participation as traditional short-term hospitals, long-term acute care facilities are state licensed as an acute hospital and reimbursed from Medicare accordingly.
