![]() Our MissionTo provide exceptional health services to unique patients with long-term acute care needs. We are focused on:
Our VisionTo be the best long-term acute care hospital in the country. This vision will be defined by:
| Our historyEstablished in 1987, RML Specialty Hospital primarily focused on treating and weaning patients dependent on mechanical ventilators, and today is the largest single ventilator weaning hospital in the nation. Our scope expanded several years ago with the addition of our Wound Management and Medically Complex programs. In 2003 and again in 2005, the National Association of Long Term Hospitals (NALTH) recognized RML's innovative methodologies in wound management with prestigious best practice awards. The Medically Complex program brings the expertise of RML and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) together to provide the very best in medical treatment and rehabilitation therapies for those suffering from multiple conditions. Accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), RML is a partnership between Rush University Medical Center and Loyola University Health System. Dedicated to individualized patient careAs the center of excellence for long-term acute care, RML meets each patient's individualized needs through a compassionate approach to health care delivered by a caring staff. In every area, RML team members take time to listen, lend a helping hand, and address the medical and personal needs of each patient. Physicians and staff are on-site, around the clock, so patients are constantly monitored to immediately respond to patient needs. Our team is made up of 100+ physicians and more than 400 nurses, respiratory and rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, and clinical dietitians who are dedicated to providing care and comfort to RML patients. Many of our team members have made their careers at RML and have worked together closely for years. We believe our cohesive, mutually supportive team and our commitment to healing promote a culture of care that is unlike any other long-term acute care hospital. Committed to advanced researchImproving the quality of life for our patients doesn't end with hands on treatment. It extends to clinical research. RML is currently involved in several studies that may change the way individuals are weaned from mechanical ventilators and enable them to lead more independent lives. Long-term Acute Care HospitalsLong-term acute care hospitals (LTCH) are designed for patients who need intense, extended care following treatment at a traditional acute care facility. These patients usually have medically complex or multiple medical conditions and generally require hospitalization for more than 25 days. LTCHs must meet all the same conditions of participation as traditional short-term hospitals, and are state licensed as acute hospitals. Our partnersRML is owned by two of the nation's most prestigious and advanced medical facilities - Rush University Medical Center and Loyola University Health System. The only University-owned LTCH in the Midwest, RML is committed to research, advancements in medicine, and improving patient lives. Rush University Medical CenterRush University Medical Center, Chicago, includes the 671-bed hospital; the Bowman Health Center; and Rush University (Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences and the Graduate College). Rush is currently constructing a 14-floor, 806,000-square-foot hospital building at the corner of Ashland Avenue and Congress Parkway. The new hospital, scheduled to open in 2012, is the centerpiece of a $1 billion, ten-year campus redevelopment plan called the Rush Transformation, which also includes a new orthopedics building, a new parking garage and central power plant, renovations of selected existing buildings and demolition of obsolete buildings. The new hospital is being designed and built to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and use sustainable building materials. Rush is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It will be the first full-service, “green” hospital in Chicago.
