• What is an LTCH A Long-Term Acute Care Hospital (LTCH) serves the needs of patients who have received traditional hospital care for a significant illness or injury, yet still need continued acute-level care. RML Specialty Hospital is a Medicare-approved LTCH that provides 24-hour, on-site physician coverage and a fully trained staff to care for complex medical conditions.
  • Is an LTCH similar to a nursing home? No, an LTCH provides daily physician interventions to patients with serious medical issues like ventilator dependency, non-healing wounds and other complex conditions. Nursing homes typically provide care to patients who no longer require daily physician visits.
  • What types of patients need LTCH care? At RML Specialty Hospital, we care for patients with a range of serious medical conditions: complex respiratory needs including ventilator weaning; extensive wounds; multiple infections requiring IV antibiotics; nutrition issues; oxygen needs; and more.
  • Do patients see their doctor every day? Yes, the physicians at RML Specialty Hospital assess our patients daily. In addition, because of the complexity of the patients we treat, we provide 24-hour on-site physician coverage at both of our hospital sites. To further meet our patients’ needs, consulting physicians from a wide variety of specialties are also available.
  • What rehabilitation services are available? RML Specialty Hospital offers a range of rehabilitation services based on physician orders and the patient’s ability to participate. These include: physical, occupational, and speech therapy—all available Monday through Saturday.
  • Are all patient rooms private? Yes, for maximum comfort and convenience, the rooms at RML Specialty Hospital are single-patient rooms. They are equipped with a TV, telephone, wireless internet access and activity boards to help keep patients and families updated on daily schedules, therapy progress and more.
  • How long do patients stay in the LTCH setting? On average, a patient will stay in an LTCH for 28 to 35 days. Although patients at RML Specialty Hospital typically stay within that range, each patient’s length-of-stay varies depending on medical needs and progress toward recovery.
  • Do you offer support services for patients and families? Yes, at RML Specialty Hospital, our psychology professionals offer multiple services to address your needs including family support groups and individual patient counseling. Our Chaplains and Patient Ambassadors also provide emotional and spiritual support for our patients and families throughout their hospital stay.
  • Where do patients go when they are discharged from an LTCH? While some patients are well enough to return home, many require additional assistance and often go to an acute rehabilitation program or a skilled nursing unit for continued care. At RML Specialty Hospital, our Care Coordinators work with you to prepare you for discharge and give you the information needed to make an informed discharge placement decision.
  • How can I best decide if RML is right for my family? To learn more, ask your discharge planner to contact us, or call our Intake offices directly. A Nurse Liaison will do an on-site assessment to assure RML is clinically appropriate for you. They will answer questions and help assure a smooth transition to either RML location.
