At RML Specialty Hospital, we understand your responsibilities to your critically ill patients. Because their illnesses are often complicated by multiple and varying medical conditions, a long-term acute care hospital may be necessary for their continued care and recovery. For nearly 20 years, the LTACH provider of choice in the Chicagoland area continues to be RML Specialty Hospital.

Delivering care through specialized medical programs

RML offers your patients a distinct level of care and attention, delivered by a highly-credentialed, multidisciplinary team of 80 physician specialists and more than 400 staff members, including nurses, respiratory and rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, and nutritionists. Many have devoted much of their careers to RML and have worked together as a cohesive, mutually supportive team for years. We believe that the qualifications of our professionals and our commitment to our patients create a culture of care that is unlike any other facility.

Built and enhanced by our team, RML’s specialized medical programs address the unique needs of some of the weakest and most fragile patients:

Ventilator Weaning – the largest program of its kind in the nation, designed to discontinue or reduce an individual’s dependence on the ventilator and restore maximum respiratory function
Wound Management – nationally recognized for contributions to best practices in the treatment of slow-to-heal and non-healing wounds
Medically Complex – focused on the functional aspects of rehabilitation commensurate with a patient’s strength and abilities (Co-managed by Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, which provides medical direction for patient care)

Advancing medicine through research

RML also is committed to advancing quality in patient care and improving patient outcomes through clinical research. In conjunction with partners from Loyola University Medical Center, our physicians are currently involved in a number of ventilator weaning research studies. RML pulmonologist Dr. Amal Jubran is the principal investigator for the Weaning from Prolonged Ventilation study, funded by the National Institute of Health (National Institute of Nursing Research). Areas of investigation for this and related studies include: predicting the best way to wean patients from mechanical ventilation, long-term outcomes, patient anxiety levels, and quality of life issues.

Responding to medically complex needs

RML patients suffer from a wide variety of critical illness and conditions, including:

  • The inability to breathe independently due to catastrophic injury or illness
  • Severe, debilitating heart disease
  • Diseases (such as diabetes) that impede recovery
  • Lung injury due to infection or surgery complications
  • Wounds that will not heal normally, usually resulting from limited mobility or existing chronic conditions such as diabetes or vascular disease
  • Slow-healing wounds from burns or surgery complications
  • Degenerating physical ability, severe speech, nutrition or cognitive impairment caused by an existing or prior medical condition
  • A combination of medical conditions that impede recovery
